Indonesia expands gas station network to boost economic development in rural areas

Indonesia, a country rich in natural resources, is always looking for ways to harness their potential to drive economic growth and improve livelihoods, especially in rural areas. Recently, the government has taken major steps to expand the petrol station network to more remote areas to support this goal.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasreef said the government planned to build 1,000 petrol stations in underserved areas across the country, targeting areas with few or no petrol stations at all. The effort involves a variety of stakeholders, including state oil company Pertamina, local governments and private investors.

The rationale behind this move is to create a more enabling environment for business and investment in rural areas, which often lack basic infrastructure and services. By providing affordable and reliable fuel, the government hopes to attract more entrepreneurs and investors to these areas, thereby stimulating economic activity and creating jobs.

In addition, the petrol station expansion will improve access and benefit the wider community, particularly in remote areas where public transport is scarce. This will facilitate the movement of goods and people, connect rural areas with urban centres, and increase access to markets, services and employment opportunities.

In addition to its economic benefits, the initiative aligns with Indonesia's efforts to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and promote renewable energy. Alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicle charging facilities will also be available at the petrol stations, Tasreef said, reflecting the government's commitment to transition to a more sustainable energy system.

The expansion of the gas station network in Indonesia is a positive development that can help bridge the rural-urban divide and drive inclusive growth across the country. By creating more entrepreneurial opportunities and improving access to essential services such as fuel and transport, the government is laying the foundations for a more prosperous and sustainable future.
