What is the difference between CNG and LNG used in automobiles

May 09, 2024

What is the difference between the two natural gas fuels used in automobiles, CNG (compressed natural gas) and LNG (liquefied natural gas)?

There are generally two types of natural gas vehicles. One is modified on the basis of existing gasoline and diesel vehicles, and the other is original natural gas vehicles. Generally speaking, the price of original natural gas vehicles will be higher than that of natural gas vehicles that have been modified after leaving the factory. . Natural gas vehicles can be divided into liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles, compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles according to the different states of the natural gas fuel used.

Pipeline gas, compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) are the three main forms of natural gas transportation and storage, which together constitute the natural gas mid-range transportation, storage and transportation market.

At present, pipeline gas is still the main force in natural gas transportation in my country, which can solve large-scale transportation problems and has certain natural monopoly characteristics. Relatively flexible and cheap LNG and CNG are mainly supplied to areas where pipeline gas cannot reach, solving problems such as distribution and peak shaving. Compared with CNG, LNG is further purified during the liquefaction process (heavy hydrocarbons, sulfides and other pollution sources are removed), and is higher in purity and non-corrosive.

At the same time, its specific volume is smaller, and its weight is about 45% of the same volume of water. Therefore, LNG is more convenient for storage and transportation, and is also more suitable as a fuel for vehicles and ships. The entire process of natural gas from the wellhead of the oil and gas field to the end user is called the natural gas supply chain, and the system composed of all the facilities involved in this supply chain is called the natural gas supply system.
