What is LNG?

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been purified to remove heavy hydrocarbons, sulfur compounds, carbon dioxide, and water. It is then cooled to -162°C under normal pressure, transforming it from a gaseous to a liquid state. This process not only liquefies the gas but also enhances its purity, resulting in a product that is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-corrosive, with virtually no CO2 or sulfur content.

 

Storage and Transportation Efficiency
LNG occupies about 1/625 of the volume of natural gas in its gaseous state, making it significantly more efficient for storage and transportation. With a weight approximately 45% that of an equivalent volume of water, LNG's high energy density allows for easier handling and transport.

 

Advantages of LNG Over CNG
Compared to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), LNG offers several compelling advantages:

  • Environmental Benefits: LNG burns cleaner, producing fewer harmful emissions.
  • Safety: LNG is utilized at normal pressure, reducing the risks associated with high-pressure systems.
  • Convenience: LNG can be vaporized for use without the need for extensive pipeline infrastructure, utilizing air temperature vaporizers instead.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Lower installation costs are achieved by eliminating the need for expensive compressors and related equipment.
  • Extended Range: One cubic meter of LNG can generate 625 cubic meters of natural gas, extending the operational range of vehicles.
  • High Efficiency in Storage and Transport: The compact nature of LNG facilitates its movement over long distances.

 

Applications of CNG and LNG
Typically, CNG is used in lighter vehicles such as taxis, short-distance buses, and private cars. In contrast, LNG is preferred for heavy-duty applications like long-haul trucks, heavy-duty vehicles, and long-distance buses. Interestingly, some regions do use LNG for short-distance buses, demonstrating its versatility.

 

LPG Confusion in Urban Areas
In certain cities, such as Guangzhou and Hong Kong, the term "gas" commonly refers to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is distinct from both CNG and LNG. LPG is derived from petroleum and primarily consists of propane. Compared to natural gas, LPG has a higher pollution level and poses greater safety risks due to its flammable nature and potential for explosion. Additionally, LPG is generally more expensive than natural gas, despite offering good performance.

As global environmental standards continue to rise, LNG is increasingly being promoted as a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels. Its numerous advantages position it as a vital player in the future of energy, especially in the transportation sector.
